Jun-Ichi Yano: Gestalten in Science

On November 22, a seminar of the Centre for Systemic Risk Analysis of the University of Warsaw was held. Our guest was Dr. Jun-Ichi Yano from Météo-France in Toulouse: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=nM0BYvIAAAAJ&hl=en

Dr. Jun-Ichi Yano works at the Center National de Recherches Météorologiques, Météo-France in Toulouse. He got his Ph.D. in meteorology at Kyoto University in Japan. He held research internships, e.g. at MIT and NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) in the United States, at the University of Hamburg in Germany, and Monash University in Australia.

Gestalten in Science

Dr. Yano presented the topic entitled “Gestalten in science”. During his speech, he gave a philosophical reflection on science, starting with the word “Gestalt” and making it a keyword.

The specific example that Dr. Yano referred to in the discussion was the organization of cloud convection observed in the atmosphere on a planetary scale, with particular reference to a phenomenon called the Madden-Julian oscillation. Philosophical reflections were based principally on the work Ludwig Wittgenstein’s  “Philosophische Untersuchungen”.
