Category: systemic risk, war on Ukraine
On October 27, the first seminar in the series of events “UAM-UW-UJ_Promujemy badania transdziedzinowe” took place, jointly organized by Adam Mickiewicz University, University of Warsaw and Jagiellonian University.
The primary speaker was: Prof. Miguel Centeno from the Department of Sociology, at Princeton University. He is Musgrave Professor of Sociology and Executive Vice-Dean of the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) and published many articles, chapters, and books about the issue of systemic risk. His latest publications are War and Society (Polity 2016), Global Capitalism (Polity 2010), States in the Developing World (Cambridge UP, 2017). Professor Centeno is the leader of the Research Community on Global Systemic Risk funded by PIIRS in 2013 (http://risk.princeton.edu).
The purpose of the seminar was to discuss primary areas of global disruption inflicted by the war in Ukraine and seek possible ways of building resilience to future ‘black swan’ events.
Prof. Miguel Centeno gave a presentation entitled “Global systemic risk”, in which he explained what is the phenomenon of increasing systemic risk on a global scale. He defined systemic risk, i.e. the disturbance of the basic mechanisms of social, economic, and political stability, and highlighted its interdisciplinary character. Below we provide a presentation by Dr. Centeno in PDF version.
In the second part of the seminar there was a discussion, opened with the comments of Dr. Paweł Marczewski, who addressed an issue of the war in Ukraine, in particular in the context of how Polish state and local authorities and social organizations deal with the influx of refugees from Ukraine.
Our seminar is the first from a series of events jointly organized by Adam Mickiewicz University, University of Warsaw, and Jagiellonian University to foster multidisciplinary research and education, within the project, in transdisciplinary research and education of Ph.D. students and young researchers, called “Resilience in a world of permanent crisis”. Seminars will be organized once a month and we will advertise them on our webpage.
